When is MRI used?
MRI can shed light on a variety of pathological processes in body tissues, from circulatory disorders and injuries to spinal disc incidents, joint inflammations, arthritis and infections up to tumor diseases. Particularly in neurology, cardiac diagnostics and sports medicine, MRI is indispensable for a differentiated diagnosis.
Common applications for MRI
An MRI examination provides valuable information, especially in cases of:
- injuries to joints, tendons, ligaments, discs, cartilage and menisci
- coronary heart disease and heart muscle inflammation
- suspected tumors and metastases
- circulatory disorders and bone infections
- vascular diseases
- spinal disc injuries and other spinal cord disorders
- breast cancer and breast implants
MRI is not suitable for the depiction of structures with a low concentration of hydrogen atoms, e.g. the lungs. When lung illnesses are suspected, different diagnostic procedures are usually employed.
